When I first met Mary and Chris, I was blown away at their infectious personality. Since they live in Massachusetts, we only chatted via Google Hangouts but it felt like we were in the same room. Chris proposed on the Ocean City boardwalk, after dating for 10 years. They were high school sweethearts, who dated long distance before finally residing in the same city again while at the College of Charleston in South Carolina.
Mary and Chris have had so many special moments on the Ocean City, Maryland boardwalk, and since they were getting married there, we knew that a coastal theme was the right fit from the very start. We started off the design process with a Design Lookbook, complete with very rough sketches of what the invitation might look like.
I like to create a couple different options for my couples to choose from, so that we can narrow down what they are really looking for. Most couples have a vision when they come in to the process, but don’t always know what all options there are out there. The early sketch process helps us all think through all the possible options and envision the invitation, details card and response card together.
After we choose a direction for the invitation card, details and response card, I move forward with the finalized calligraphy and fonts for all of the pieces, and more formal sketches of the watercolor components for Proof One!
This gives my couple the opportunity to make tweaks and changes as we go through the process, and make sure that we are headed in the right direction. This step is always in black and white, so that we can focus just on the design, rather than the colors.
For Mary & Chris’s suite, I used the whimsical Sadie style calligraphy, paired with a serif font to keep things formal, but fun!
Once Proof One is approved, we head into Proof Two, where I paint the watercolor components, add color and add in envelope colors. For Mary & Chris, I used a light dusty blue watercolor wash for the invitation and response card paired with navy calligraphy. Then we let the details card shine with a custom map of Ocean City, Maryland complete with locations that are special to the couple.
And finally, it’s time to look at the complete suite with the envelopes! While each piece needs to look beautiful individually, it’s important to be sure that the entire suite is cohesive.
I love how Mary & Chris’s suite turned out, it is truly the perfect balance of coastal and formal!
